Illinois School Lights Up with Energy Efficiency Project

At Galatia Grade School, students, teachers, and parents are the very life of the building. So when it comes to caring for the place that provides education and community, District administration makes it a high priority.

Challenge

After touring the classrooms and offices at Galatia Grade School, the Superintendent of Galatia Community School District #1 observed that the lighting was inadequate. Instead of fostering vibrant learning environments, the rooms appeared dim and less inviting. Discussions with the building maintenance team revealed that the school’s lighting fixtures were outdated, primarily consisting of T8 and T12 fluorescent technology from the original construction.

“Walking into the classrooms I couldn’t help but notice a general yellow hue, and in some rooms, dark spots. Looking up, I could tell the lighting was outdated,” noted the Superintendent.

Recognizing the potential for LED technology to substantially reduce energy costs and enhance the quality of the learning environment, the Superintendent sought guidance from Usource to evaluate available options and determine the most effective solution for the school’s lighting needs.

Solution

Following an in-depth discussion and an investment-grade site audit, Usource presented the District with a comprehensive set of recommendations, including a detailed savings analysis and various financing options. The decision to upgrade the lighting was financially challenging, given the tight budgets and extensive project lists typical of schools. However, for the Superintendent and the School Board, the focus remained on the students and teachers and the critical role of a conducive learning environment.

“We knew a lighting upgrade would have a direct and immediate impact not only on student classrooms and teacher offices, but on energy costs. This was one project that would create budget savings and enhance the quality of learning,” noted the Superintendent.

Result

Given budget constraints, the District opted to implement the lighting upgrades in two phases, with Phase 1 focusing on the Grade School classrooms and offices. This initial phase was completed in just three days over the summer.

The installation of new lighting fixtures and the replacement of outdated technology in the Grade School have made a noticeable impact. Students, teachers, and district administrators have all remarked on the significant improvement. “The new lights are incredible! We’ve heard numerous comments from the community on the brightness and clarity of the rooms. Our maintenance staff is also happy to be freed up to tend to other repairs,” stated a District representative.
